JUNE 25, 2014 — Classification society Lloyd’s Register has appointed Nick Brown as Marine Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Brown, who was previously Director Business Development & Innovation, reports to Marine Director Tom Boardley and will be responsible for LR’s four global operating regions – Asia, Americas, Northern Europe and Southern Europe.

David Barrow becomes Regional Marine Manager (RMM) for a new Northern Europe region while Apostolos Poulovassilis is RMM for Southern Europe, Middle East and Africa. Iain Wilson and Tim Protheroe remain in their Asia and Americas roles.

Mr. Boardley  said Mr. Brown’s appointment as Marine COO was “driven by growth in Lloyd’s Register’s Marine activities.

“Nick is well placed to coordinate global operations to ensure successful delivery of the large orderbook of ships being built to LR class,” said Mr. Boardley. “Nick’s leadership will also ensure that LR has the best understanding of the technical and commercial challenges facing the marine industry and continues to innovate services to support our clients in meeting ever increasing safety, environmental and efficiency ambitions.”

“We move into our new Marine headquarters at the LR Global Technology Center in Southampton as the commercial pressures and technical challenges continue to mount in our industry,” said Mr. Brown. “I will be focussed on connecting current and future client needs with service innovation and operational excellence to provide the support that our clients and stakeholders need. Class continues to evolve and we are working hard to provide the right combination of expertise in safety, environmental and efficiency performance of both assets and operations.”

A 19 year LR veteran, Mr. Brown began his career as a graduate engineer before commencing work as a field surveyor. Since leaving the field he has held increasingly important business development and operational roles in London and Asia. Before returning to the Marine headquarters in Southampton, U.K.,  to take up his most recent role as Director, Business Development & Innovation, he was in charge of LR’s Greater China activities and operations.

Mr. Brown will retain leadership of the Business Development & Innovation team, including Luis Benito (Marketing), Hector Sewell (Sales) and Gwynne Lewis (Consulting) who will be joined by LR’s “other” Nick Brown, the Global Marine Communications Manager.
