Swedish based Terntank, a pioneer of LNG as a marine fuel, is taking the next step towards carbon-neutral shipping. It has ordered two new 15,000 dwt chemical/product/biofuels tankers at China’s AVIC Dingheng Shipbuilding.

In addition to being designed for operation on liquid biogas (LBG) or LNG, they will feature a hybrid battery system with the ability to recharge from shoreside power.

The order includes an option for a further two ships.

Built to a Rolls-Royce (now Kongsberg) design, the newbuilds are set to be in operation in the Baltic Sea and the North Sea in 2021.

“Close cooperation with customers, and with the crew on shore and onboard, has made it possible to further develop environmentally friendly supply chains and to take the next steps towards carbon-neutral shipping,” says Terntank. “Doing business in a sustainable way and cutting down emissions are core values for Terntank and its customers.”

These AVIC Series 2.0 vessels will be developed building on experience with the previous AVIC series, with many additional innovative improvements to reduce environmental impacts. For example, the vessels’ new electric power supply system will include battery pack, shore-power connection and bow thruster drive (hybrid).

Energy consumption and emissions will be further reduced by using the latest digital solutions for operational optimization.
