New coal carrier for Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines

MAY 16, 2014—Japan’s Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., recently delivered the 85,555-gt Energy Prometheus to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL). MOL will operate the Energy Prometheus to transport coal to Hokuriku Electric Power Company.

Built at the Oshima shipyard, the coal carrier has an overall length of 228.4m, beam of 36.5m and depth of 19.89m. With its wider beam and reduced depth, the ship can serve shallow water ports while maximizing cargo loading. With its wide, shallow draft hull and the advanced equipment on board, the vessel should show excellent economic performance.

The coal carrier is named “Energy Prometheus” after the MOL-operated coal carrier that served Hokuriku ports with coal for Hokuriku Electric Power in the past. With a long-term consecutive voyage service contract in hand, the coal carrier will play a central role in MOL transport service of coal for Hokuriku Electric Power.
