
Defense Minister “wouldn’t trust ASC to build a canoe”

NOVEMBER 25, 2014 — Things are getting heated in the debate over whether Australia should build its next-generation submarines at government owned shipbuilder ASC or buy them overseas.
In an exchange in Senate question time today, Defense Minister Senator David Johnston noted that ASC was Australian $350 billion over budget on a project to build three air warfare destroyers and that that could rise to A$600 million.
“You wonder why I’m worried about ASC and what they’re delivering to the Australian taxpayer? You wonder why I wouldn’t trust them to build a canoe,” he told the Senate.
