The new 4H50 has been converted for maritime applications
AUGUST 6, 2014 — Ruhstorf, Germany, based Hatz Diesel will use next month’s SMM event to showcase its marine product line-up.
Hatz is a leading manufacturer of industrial diesel engines in the 1.5 kW to 56 kW power range and for 20 years its Marine Center of Excellence has developed and produced Germanischer Lloyd (GL) certified power generators, pumps and drive units for work and fish boats.
At SMM, Hatz will present its plans for a marinized version of its newly developed 4H50TIC engine which has been in series production since the beginning of 2014 and is designed primarily for use in construction machinery, as well as for stationary and mobile applications. For use as a marine propulsion engine, keel cooling was adopted for the required engine cooling while insulation was installed in the exhaust silencer to reduce heat radiation.
In other regards, the 4H50TIC marine has the same characteristics as the base engine. The 55 kW water-cooled 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine is equipped with a Bosch common rail system with 1800 bar rail pressure.
The engine sets new standards in its class in terms of power to weight ratio, size and fuel efficiency. At only 173 kg the engine is about 90 kg lighter and correspondingly smaller than its nearest competitor and has a low specific fuel consumption of just 205 g / kWh at its optimum point and not more than 240 g / kWh in a very broad speed and load range that reflects a realistic operational cycle.
The off-highway version of the engine easily achieves the EU 97/68 Stage IIIB and the U.S. EPA Tier 4 exhaust emission levels, both of which are more stringent, says Hatz, than the equivalent limits for maritime applications.
In addition to the 4H50TIC marine two other Hatz maritime products will be introduced at SMM: a 1B50 enginewith a maximum power of 8.5 kW, including transmission, which in particular is aimed at commercial and non-commercial fishing, as well as a 2M41 engine, constructed and certified according to GL specifications.
