IMarEst appoints new CEO
Written byDavid Loosley has been appointed Chief Executive of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST), and will be taking up the role on November 7. 2011. He joins the Institute from the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) where, as Head of Operations, he has been responsible for the operational delivery of maritime safety information to the British Government and the world-wide maritime community since his appointment in April 2007.

Established in London in 1889, IMarEST is a leading international membership body and learned society for marine professionals, with over 15,000 members worldwide. The Institute has a strong international presence with an extensive marine network of 50 international branches, affiliations with major marine societies around the world, representation on the key marine technical committees and non-governmental status at the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Prior to joining the UKHO, David Loosley was Divisional Managing Director at Williams Lea, a business process outsourcing company, specializing in corporate information.
David Loosley joined the Royal Navy in 1988 as a University Cadet Entrant, completing his basic training at Britannia Royal Naval College and in HMS Bristol before attending Southampton University to study Oceanography. His first appointment was as Navigating Officer of HMS Qorn during which time he spent six months with a NATO Squadron in the Baltic. A short tour to the Falkland Islands followed, where he coordinated a busy tri-service operations center. He then joined HMS Cornwall as Officer of the Watch, Communications Officer and Diving Officer. In 1997, David Loosley was appointed to Northern Ireland and was responsible for helping the planning and logistics for four Patrol Vessels.
In 1998 David Loosley joined a consultancy in Bath to help launch a ground breaking internet product into the recruitment industry. He was responsible for the marketing and distributor strategy and opened up channels in Scandinavia, South Africa and Europe.
