Polarcus Naila set for refit at Shipdock Amsterdam

DECEMBER 17, 2013 — The 3D seismic vessel Polarcus Naila is set to arrive in Amsterdam in February 2014. It is scheduled for a six week visit to ship repair and coversion yard Shipdock Amsterdam, part of Damen Shipyards Group, that will see it receive apropulsion upgrade and undergo modification works in order to be classified as a Special Purpose Ship. Other work will includes Ballast Water Treatment system installation, installation of a new workboat and davits, relocation of the MOB and 5-year special survey.

During the shipyard stay certain modifications will additionally be made to the deflector handling systems to enable the vessel to tow a full 12 streamer spread.

Prefabrication works on two gondolas that need to be fitted to the vessel have already started and will be completely outfitted before arrival of the vessel at the yard. That work is being carried out at Niron Staal, also part of Damen Shipyards Group, a specialized steel construction and machining company located on the premises of Shipdock.

“The real show will start at the end of February 2014 when the vessel will be taken out of production and will dock at the yard for a 35 day period in which the conversion works will be realized,” says Flip van der Waal, General Manager Shipdock Amsterdam. “Taking day rates of a seismic survey vessel into account, time literally is money and the vessel will need to be back in business as soon as possible. It is therefore not surprising that Polarcus decided to bring the vessel to Shipdock Amsterdam, fully aware of the management and technical capabilities, due to experiences in the past.”

Polarcus and Shipdock have been doing business since 2010. The relationship between the companies has become stronger since then and formed the basis for the successful booking of the upgrade conversion job.
