SEPTEMBER 8, 2016—This year marks the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the Azipod, which has enjoyed particular success as a propulsion choice for cruise vessels and icebreakers. Over the years, ABB has constantly refined and improved the energy efficiency of the Azipod through a number of design changes.

At SMM 2016 in Hamburg, Germany, ABB announced a major step to improve the Azipod XO series’ hydrodynamic performance. The new Azipod XL, Linear Flow Propulsor Azipod, is a logical continuation in the Azipod propulsion unit series and improves the efficiency up to 5 to 10 percent compared to the present high efficiency Azipod XO.

Marine Log’s Paul Hutton spoke with ABB’s Jukka Varis, VP Technology and Business Development, to get the scoop on the Azipod XO. You can listen to the podcast interview by clicking the link below.
