ClassNK amends rules

DECEMBER 27, 2013 — Classification society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) has released an updated edition of the Rules and Guidance for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships.

ClassNK continuously reviews, updates, and amends its technical rules and guidance  in order to reflect the latest research results from damage investigations as well as changes made to relevant international conventions, IACS Unified Requirements, national regulations, and requests from the maritime industry.

The following are some of the amendments made in order to reflect changes made to IACS Unified Requirements taking effect on January 1, 2014:

  • Requirements related to “Provision of Free-fall Lifeboats on Ships Converted to Bulk Carriers”;
  • Requirements related to “Earthing of Cargo Piping Systems in Tankers”
  • Requirements related to “Definition of ‘Beginning Stage of Construction’ for FRP Ships”
  • Requirements related to “Unified Interpretations, etc. for the IMO PSPC for Cargo Oil Tankers.”

Both printed and CD-ROM versions of the rules and guidance are available for purchase online, and the PDF version of the rules and guidance are available free of charge on ClassNK’s website www.classnk.com for those who have registered for the ClassNK “My Page” service.
