EBH Namibia drydocks a dry dock

SEPTEMBER 21, 2017 — Walvis Bay ship repairer EBH Namibia is busy with a somewhat unusual task: drydocking a dry dock. The floating dry dock that is under repair is owned by the Angolan Ministry of Fisheries (Pescangola). Called the Boa Vista, its basic hull was constructed in 2011 by a shipyard in Ukraine and then completed by Portuguese shipyard ENP before being sold to the Angolan government. With dimensions of 62m x 21m it has a 2,000 tons lift capacity.

According to Willie Esterhuyse, Commercial and Marketing Manager at EBH Namibia, work required to restore the dock to a good operational state. This will involve approximately 25 tons of steel repairs, corrosion protection and the commissioning of all systems. This will require the dock will have to spend some 20 days at EBHN’s Panamax-sized Namport 3 floating dry dock; and then a further 10 days berthed in Walvis Bay.

The Pescangola dock arrived in Walvis Bay on August 30. Prior to that an EBH Namibia team had travelled to Luanda, Angola, to ensure that the dock was seaworthy, and compliant with international towing regulations, enabling it to be towed the more than 900 nautical milesto Walvis Bay.
