In a tweet on January 4, U.K. Secretary of Defence Ben Wallace announced that Royal Navy ships HMS Montrose and HMS Defender will resume accompaniments of U.K.-flagged commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Specifically, Secretary Wallace said he had instructed preparations for the two warships to return to accompanying duties for “Red Ensign Shipping.”

The Red Ensign Group includes not only U.K. flag vessels, but also merchant vessels registered in Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, the Isle of Man, plus Anguilla, the Falkland Islands, Jersey, Montserrat, St. Helena and Turks & Caicos.
