SEPTEMBER 11, 2016—The buzz at SMM 2016 in Hamburg, Germany, this past week was of increasing digitalization of the ship, allowing various systems onboard to be connected, enhancing the control of the vessel and providing decision-support functionality on shore. All of the data from cargo loading to engine performance to weather and wind are collected and analyzed in an effort to make the ship operate in the most efficient way. In short, there will be smarter ships in the future.

At SMM 2016, Marine Log spoke with Maik Stoevhase, Senior Vice President of Automation, Navigation, and Communication, Wärtsilä Marine Solutions, to gain some insight into the developments of smarter ships. Updated functionality to the Wärtsilä Nacos Platinum series were rolled at SMM, including intelligent route planning, automated execution, and scalable plug in software.

The idea behind the digital ship is to create one product platform to bring all of the data together in one pool that can be accessed by the operators onboard, as well as the shore-side management, says Stoevhase. The captain and shore-side management will then have access to better decision-making tools that will help in operating the ship as efficiently as possible.
