Samsung Heavy Industries develops antipiracy system

Written by

antipiracy systemA Korean shipbuilder has developed an integrated anti-piracy system that includes a surveillance system capable of detecting pirate vessels up to 10 km out and then dealing with them with long range, high power water cannons.

Samsung Heavy Industries has  developed radar technology to analyze the speed and movement of suspected pirate craft, track them and raise an alarm. The radar tracking is supplemented by night vision technology.  If the suspect vessel does not divert, it is engaged by water cannons remotely controlled and operated from the wheelhouse.

The system has been developed in conjunction with Hanjin Shipping and  Korea’s Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs.

The anti-piracy system has been announced following the recently well-publicized, but high risk, rescue of the crew of the Samho Jewelry by Korean special forces. There have been concerns that pirates have been targeting South Korean ships in particular since the payment of a reported record ransom of $9.5 million for the release of another Samho ship, the Samho Dream, last November.
