New Tsuneishi bulker bow design cuts wind resistance

JUNE 2, 2014 — Japan’s Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. is marketing a 63,700 dwt bulker equipped with new Aeroline technology to reduce wind resistance.

Aeroline combines Tsuneishi’s previously introduced cut-corner design for the accommodations block with a newly developed rounded, streamlined shape for the fore upper bow said to give a 10% reduction in wind resistance.

The new design is 10 m longer than the TESS58, previously the largest in the TESS (Tsuneishi Economical Standard Ship) HANDYMAX series, taking it into the 60,000-ton class for improved transport efficiency.

The new TESS64 Aeroline bulk carrier is also fitted with newly developed TOP-GR (Tsuneishi Optimized Propulsive Gear) propellers for lower vibration and higher propulsion efficiency, and FAIS (Fresh Air Intake System) which boosts the engine’s fuel efficiency through direct intake of cool outside air.

The TESS64 AEROLINE design emphasis has been on performance under actual sea conditions (actual operating speed at full load draft).

Other particulars

  • An “MT-FAST” multiple-wing structure that attaches to the front part of the propeller improves propulsion efficiency approximately 4% by smoothing out water flow.
  • Equipped with “SEAWORTHY” system for reducing wave resistance in the fore bow, which allows the sea margin (for increased wave resistance) to be reduced by as much as 5% through low resistance even in rough seas.
  • Hull bottom structure reinforced to enable loading of heavy items such as steel products.
  • Ballast water management system is standard equipment.
