Marine Log’s FERRIES kicked off its first-ever presentation as a virtual event with over 400 participants—nearly quadruple the event’s attendance in 2019. This year’s event was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic that is impacting most in-person conferences and trade shows around the world.

The two-day lineup of industry expert speakers covered a number of topics important to vessel owners, operators, designers and builders.

The event began with a co-presentation on grants for passenger ferries by Dick Balzano, deputy administrator at MARAD, and K. Jane Williams, deputy administrator with the Federal Transit Authority.

Cameron Clark, senior vice president of Hornblower Group, spoke on ticketing and API-Coherence.

Other topics included company and operator responses to COVID-19; updates on various ferry projects that are either in the concept or testing phases; news on current regulations that could impact passenger and ferry vessels; cybersecurity plans for small fleets; overviews on current advances in technology, including electrification and hybrid ferries; and more.

In addition to its speakers, FERRIES was backed by a number of sponsors, which included BAE Systems, DNV GL, The Shearer Group,

Robert “Bob” Lennon, business development manager–Americas for Rexnord CENTA, headquartered in Milwaukee, Wis., moderated the event.

Depending on pandemic developments, Marine Log’s next event, TTB 2021 for the tug, towboat and barge market, is scheduled to take place on March 23 through 24 in Mobile, Ala. The event will be virtual on those dates if travel is not possible.
