Donjon derrick barge unloads wind farm components
Written byDonjon Marine Co., Inc.’s Chesapeake 1000 derrick barge was recently used to unload 22 wind turbine nacelles, each weighing 87 metric tons, from the M/V BBC Orinoco at Searsport, Me.
The services of the derrick barge were supplied August 19 through 21, 2011, to BBC Chartering USA LLC and the nacelles were discharged from the M/V BBC Orinoco over the course of three, 10-hour work days.
Donjon’s tug Atlantic Salvor mobilized the derrick barge from its home base in Port Newark, N.J. to Searsport.
Prior to the Chesapeake 1000’s arrival, the BBC Orinoco self-discharged the tower sections and blades associated with the wind farm project. The wind farm components are ultimately bound for the Record Hill development in Western Maine.
“Donjon was excited to work on this cargo unloading project with the help of our Chesapeake 1000, the East Coast’s largest heavy-lift capacity derrick barges in service today,” said Steve Newes, Vice President and Project Manager, Donjon Marine Co., Inc.
