JUNE 8, 2015 — ABB has launched the NektonDrive, a new propulsion drive to help vessels use electrical power more efficiently and lower environmental impact in a sustainable way.

The NektonDrive is a low voltage variable speed drive specially designed for demanding marine applications. It covers the power range from 710 to 5,700 kW at 690V AC.

The liquid cooled drive has a compact dust-proof cabinet, minimizing the need for high power air conditioning in the installation area. To prevent dust from entering the power circuits, the upper section of the cabinet is kept closed during installation. The lower part of the cabinet holds a separate cabling entry and the vibration dampers are accessible from outside the cabinet.

Life cycle management and preventive maintenance have been key factors in designing the NektonDrive. The installed cabinet offers accessibility at the front and no service space on the side or back is necessary. A reduced number of spare part types and capabilities for remote diagnostics help to secure minimum downtime and easy access to spare parts throughout the vessel’s lifetime.
With its modular design, the NektonDrive can be designed and manufactured to meet almost any customer specific requirements.
