Tokyo-headquartered IINO Kaiun Kaisha Ltd.(IINO Lines) has recently received third party verification of its GHG assertion from classification society ClassNK.

A GHG assertion, according to the Washington, D.C., based GHG Management Institute, is “a factual and objective statement of performance related to greenhouse gases made by an Organization or Project, while “a GHG Verification is a verification of a GHG Assertion.”

Both are phrases with which shipowners are likely to become increasingly familiar as enterprises worldwide — including some of the world’s largest shippers – seek to reduce their overall carbon footprints.

IINO Lines has prepared its GHG assertion for the period from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019, quantifying the emissions from its operating fleet and offices based on ISO14064-1.and ClassNK has conducted the verification according to ISO 14064-3.

ISO 14064-3 provides two levels of assurance, and ClassNK’s verification of the IINO Lines assertion is at the “reasonable assurance” level, signifying that the society certifies the GHG assertion is materially correct and is a fair representation of the GHG data and information followed by detailed and comprehensive assessment.
