Milestone Becker Mewis Duct on display at Nor-Shipping

JUNE 5, 2015—Efficiency, environmental responsibility, and fuel savings was clearly on the mind of every ship operator that attended Nor-Shipping 2015 in Oslo, Norway, this week. One of the technology-based solutions on display at Norshipping that addresses all three is the Becker Mewis Duct. At its booth in the German Pavilion, Hamburg, Germany-based Becker Marine Systems presented details on its 1,000th Becker Mewis Duct.

Becker Marine Systems says the use of all of its previously delivered ducts has already lowered CO2 emissions by more than 1.4 million tonnes. The Becker Mewis Duct is reinforcing the aim of attaining greater sustainability in the global shipping industry. The 1,000th Becker Mewis Duct was also put on display at the entry area to the trade fair—painted green to illustrate the environmental aspect.

Following Nor-Shipping, the 1,000th Becker Mewis Duct will be fitted onto a 22,000 cubic meter LPG carrier under construction.

One of the other products on display at Nor-Shipping is the Becker Twisted Fin. Becker Marine Systems recently received new orders for 20 of these energy-saving nozzles. A global market leader in high-performance rudders, Becker Marine Systems has a current order for the largest flap rudder in the world measuring about 80 square meters. It will provide a 19,200 TEU container ship optimal maneuvering capabilities, even at a length of 400 meters and a width of just under 60 meters.

The Hamburg-based company is presenting the continuous development of its products. For example, completely grease-free rudder operation can now be ensured by means of a heavy-duty polymer bearing system, a further step towards improving environmental protection.
