JANUARY 13, 2015 — Boston Harbor Cruises is to drydock its Provincetown Ferry, the high speed catamaran Salacia,  at Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Somerset, MA, for a $2.6 million dollar engine refit.

The 600 passenger Salacia is to be fitted with four MTU 12V 4000 M64 diesels, supplied by Stewart & Stevenson, that will reduce emissions, and increase efficiency and reliability.

The Salacia will be the first vessel operating in Boston Harbor with EPA Tier III certified engines. The repower will also see the ferry fitted with ZF reduction gears that will transfer engine power to the water jet impellers.

“We are excited to be working with Boston Harbor Cruises” said David Taglieri of  Stewart & Stevenson. “The engines BHC has selected are powerful and proven pieces of equipment that will enhance the vessel’s capabilities and reliability. We look forward to providing the best engine made specifically for this vessel.”

Gladding-Hearn built the Salacia and the other vessels in the BHC fleet

“When it came time to decide where the refit would take place, it was an easy selection. Like BHC, Gladding-Hearn is a family owned and operated business with a long-standing reputation,” said Chris Nolan, Principal of Boston Harbor Cruises. “We have worked with them extensively over the years and they have always done a great job.”

“Boston Harbor Cruises operates eight high speed catamarans built by Gladding Hearn Shipbuilding. We have been building vessels with them for 18 years and are delighted to be working with them again to repower their largest and fastest vessel Salacia which we launched in 2000,” said Gladding-Hearn president Peter J. Duclos.

The refit will last about two months and is set to start this month, with sea trials beginning in March before the Salacia returns for the season.

Last year the Salacia underwent an extensive $1.5 million interior overhaul. This year the focus is on the engine refit. BHC says it is excited to complete the total revitalization of the Salacia and is looking forward to the upcoming 2015 season..
