Malaysia’s Marine Department has issued a notice to inform the shipping community that Malaysia prohibits the discharge of wash water from open-loop exhaust gas cleaning systems while in Malaysian waters (12 nautical miles from the nearest land).

Ships calling Malaysian ports are advised to change over to compliant fuel oil, or to change over to closed loop operation if a hybrid system is installed, before entering Malaysian waters and ports.

Managers and owners of Malaysian ships with open-loop scrubbers installed are advised to take note of any foreign ports that have prohibited the discharge of wash water from open-loop systems.
