FEBRUARY 26, 2016 —LR and the UK P&I Club have released a Life-Saving Appliances pocket checklist app to help ensure that ship personnel are trained in how to inspect, maintain and operate life-saving equipment, and that equipment is ready for use at all times.

They say that the Life-Saving Appliances pocket checklist app will help reduce the risk of Port State Control detentions, as it includes a list of deficiencies relating to life-saving appliances found by PSC officers on ships classed by LR.

The  app is the sixth in a series of pocket checklist apps, consisting of: ILO MLC, ISM & ISPS, Marine Fire Safety, Marine Pollution Prevention Port State Inspections, and now Life-Saving Appliances. They are all available on iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

The apps include functionality that enable ships’ crews and their managers to easily view necessary legislative and regulatory requirements, save multiple checklists, check off completed activities, add essential notes/images and send completed checklists via email.

Robert Brindle, LR’s Principal Specialist on Port State Control, commented: “Today’s seafarers have demonstrated the need for portable, interactive and paperless solutions to on board safety related issues.  The success of this series of apps helps to reinforce LR as one of the highest performing Recognized Organisations in the Paris and Tokyo MOU regions. LR’s aspiration is to continue to provide software solutions such as the apps, helping to ensure compliance with the latest regulations.”

Stuart Edmonston, Loss Prevention Director at UK P&I Club, says: “We are very proud to have produced and now completed the series of these life-saving apps. A collaborative effort needs to be made by all crew to prevent accidents onboard ships, and these apps are a great support tool in educating crew on how to avoid the threat of injuries and to know what current regulation practices are in place.  We are hoping this will drive the industry to make crew members more conscious of the risks onboard ships. By providing Members with easy access to such guidance offered by the Club, it should help reduce incidents and claims.”
