Japan plans ship powered by hydrogen-fueled two-stroke

Two-stroke will be the first hydrogen-fueled main engine for large ocean-going or coastal vessels.
A project backed with Japanese government funding aims to develop what will be the he world’s first low-speed, two-stroke hydrogen-fueled marine engine.
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL), MOL Drybulk, Ltd., and Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) today announced the signing of a basic agreement to cooperate in a trial of the hydrogen-fueled two-stroke an in-service vessel.
The ship will be operated by MOL and MOL Drybulk. The engine will be developed by J-ENG, the manufacturer of the UE two-stroke engine series, in cooperation with Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. and Yanmar Power Technology Co., Ltd.
It will be the first hydrogen-fueled main engine for large ocean-going or coastal vessels.
The engine development was selected for a government-subsidized project by Jaoan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO)
