The IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) said today that an Israeli Air Force precision strike in Bandar Abbas has eliminated IRGC Navy commander Alireza Tangsiri and intelligence chief Behnam Rezaei, key figures behind Iran’s maritime operations. The two are seen as playing a key role in engineering a situation in which what little traffic passing through the Strait of Hormuz is doing so under what Windward AI describes as “a permissions-based system, effectively routing vessels through an IRGC-operated toll booth, with no activity on the international route.”

IDF says that the removal of both Tangsiri and Rezaei marks a substantial blow to the IRGC’s naval command structure and that their elimination further degrades the organization’s ability to plan and execute operations in the maritime domain.

For the past eight years, notes IDF, Tangsiri stood at the helm of the IRGC Navy, playing a central role in shaping Iran’s maritime strategy in the Persian Gulf. Under his leadership, the IRGC Navy intensified its involvement in hostile maritime actions, including attacks on oil tankers and commercial vessels.

Rezaei was a central figure in maritime intelligence operations, responsible for gathering strategic information on regional actors and maintaining coordination with various intelligence organizations. His expertise and influence made him a key component of the IRGC Navy’s operational capabilities.

IDF says that the removal of both Tangsiri and Rezaei marks a substantial blow to the IRGC’s naval command structure and that their elimination further degrades the organization’s ability to plan and execute operations in the maritime domain.

CENTCOM Commander Admiral Brad Cooper said in a post on X that, after the elimination of 92% of the Iranian Navy’s ships, the IRGC Navy is on an irreversible decline. U.S. military strikes on the IRGC Navy will continue.

“We call on every Iranian serving in the IRGC-N to immediately abandon their post and return home to avoid further risk of injury or death,” he concluded.
