SEPTEMBER 7, 2016—One of the most challenging and complex environmental issues facing the shipping industry today is ballast water management. Untreated ballast water released at the ship’s destination port can potentially introduce thousands of microscopic invasive marine species that can harm local ecosystems and cause millions of dollars in economic damage.
For more than a decade, manufacturers from around the world have been conducting R&D and investing in new technology to help shipowners meet complex ballast water management standards. With IMO’s International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships’ Ballast Water and Sediments (BWM Convention) on the cusp of ratification, we spoke with Andrew Daley, Product Specialist, Trojan Marinex, at SMM 2016 in Hamburg, Germany, to find out what technology the company is offering to help ship operators comply with both IMO and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) regulations.
The Trojan Marinex ballast water technology product suite initially achieved IMO Type Approval in March 2014, and USCG Alternate Management System (AMS) Acceptance in August 2014. In March 2015, a formal application for USCG Type Approval was submitted—this was the first application in the industry.
Daley says Trojan Marinex has developed ballast water technology system that uses UV, to put together a compact, purpose-built solution for the marine industry. Trojan Marinex recently introduced inline lamp drivers, enabling a substantial reduction in cabling and electrical panels. With this innovation, total system footprint has been further reduced by up to 30%.
