SEPTEMBER 8, 2016—In order to survive the current downturn in the market, vessel operators can’t continue to do “business as usual.” At SMM 2016 in Hamburg, Germany, this past week, Wartsila promoted the concept of future proof shipping. What does that mean? “In order for companies to survive they have to adapt to the environment they are in,” says Aaron Bresnahan, Managing Director, Wärtsilä North America Inc. “But the other thing we are trying to do is just get away from the basic, let’s say traditional way of viewing shipping which is the tried and true mechanical approach or this is the way we’ve always done it.”

Marine Log spoke to Bresnahan about some of the challenges the industry is facing, how Wärtsilä is collaborating with vessel owners and shipyards on improving returns, cooperating with major suppliers of LNG regarding bunkering, as well as transforming itself amid increasing digitalization in the marine market.
