JUNE 5, 2015 — Richardson Devine Marine of Tasmania, Australia, has delivered the 39 m catamaran passenger ferry Kilimanjaro V, to Tanzania-based operator Azam Marine.

It is the eighth Incat Crowther designed vessel delivered to Azam, which in January ordered a near sister vessel from the Tasmanian shipbuilder.

Kilimanjaro V is a high capacity passenger and cargo vessel, designed with increased structural allowances and plate thicknesses to meet the demands of a new Azam route, an exposed and sometimes rough run from Dar Es Salaam to the island of Pemba via Zanzibar.

As the capacities of successive Kilimanjaro vessels have increased in line with  patronage growth since the series was introduced, increasing emphasis has been placed on passenger experience including boarding and disembarkation.

Kilimanjaro V has three boarding locations per side, serving the main deck cabin, the upper deck via the aft stairs and the upper deck premium cabin via a set of private stairs. Each class of cabin has its own entry to streamline passenger movement, while a dedicated ramp allows for the loading of luggage carts without crossing the path of any passengers.

The main deck is fitted with 252 seats while upstairs is spacious seating for 52 first class passengers plus 104 premium class  seats. The sun deck houses 96 passengers on calm days, making a total of 522 passengers and 10 crew.

Below decks, bunks and a bathroom provide overnight accommodations for six crew members.

Kilimanjaro V is powered by three Cummins QSK60 main engines and is propelled through two five-bladed propellers.

On sea trials, Kilimanjaro V easily achieved its contract cruise speed of 30 knots and reached a top speed of 34 knots at full load and 100% MCR.

The vessel is compliant with HSC stability requirements.
