Brittany Ferries orders LNG fueled ferry at STX France

JANUARY 14, 2014 — Brittany Ferries and shipbuilder STX France SA have now signed a contract covering the construction of a 2,474 passenger LNG fueled ferry for delivery in fourth quarter 2016. The contract is subject to completion of financing arrangements and, according to Brittany Ferries is worth EUR 270 million.

The ship is the first to be built under the PEGASIS (Power Efficient GAS Innovative Ship) project on which the ferry operator and shipbuilder have been cooperating for several years.

The 12 deck vessel will have an overall length of 210.00 m, width of 32 m, draft of 7 m and a maximum speed of 25 knots.

It will have 675 passenger cabins, including 12 Commodore suites, 51 deluxe cabins, 15 cabins for handicapped passengers and 30 cabins for pet owners.

Garage capacity is 800 cars or a mix of trucks and cars, for example 325 cars and 80 trucks

Total installed power will be 45 MW with propulsion power cited as 2 x 17,000 kW.

According to Brittany Ferries, four dual fuel diesel engines will be installed, each driving a generator, and LNG capacity will be 1,300 cu.m.

In addition to building the PEGASIS ship, Brittany Ferries’ plans for compliance with future MARPOL emission limits will see it repower three ships (Pont Aven, Brittany, Mont St Michel) to run on LNG and install scrubbers on three other ships (Barfleur, Normandy, Cap Finistère)
