NOVEMBER 28, 2018 — Spanish ferry operator Baleària reports that the two LNG fueled vessels it has under construction at Italian shipbuilder Cantiere Navale Visentini are well on the way to completion.

The first, Hypatia de Alejandría, is currently almost complete with silicone based antifouling currently being applied and sea trials, on both LNG and diesel fuel, set for the coming weeks.

Meantime, the shipyard has just floated out identical sister vessel Marie Curie. Baleària says that construction is more than 50% complete, with work now being carried out in the passenger and crew areas. The vessel’s LNG engines and tanks and primary equipment are already onboard.

The duo will be the first LNG fueled ferries to operate in the Mediterranean. The Hypatia de Alejandría is to enter service at the beginning of the year with the Marie Curie following a few months later.

Baleària’s investment in building the two ships totals EUR 200 million. They are sustainable ships with identical characteristics: 186.5 m long with a maximum speed of 24 knots and capacity for 810 people, 2,100 linear meters of cargo and 150 vehicles. Besides their 20,600 kW dual fuel LNG engines, advanced technology in the vessels includes LED lighting and the latest innovations in onboard services.
