APRIL 29, 2016 — Schottel has developed a new HTG (high-torque gears) gearbox that it describes as “a highly-efficient, robust and reliable gearbox with an ideal gearing geometry.”

It has low maintenance requirements, reduces servicing costs and also allows streamlined housings for improved hydrodynamic properties.

Products incorporating the HTG technology include the recently introduced Schottel EcoPeller (SRE), a highly efficient thruster optimized for open sea and coastal operating conditions that combines proven Schottel quality and technology with the latest, hydrodynamic improvements derived from CFD simulations and model tests.

Thanks to new HTG (High Torque Gear) gearbox technology developed and patented by Schottel, the EcoPeller offers market leading efficiency and robustness.

The HTG technology enables bevel gears of the same dimensions to transmit up to 15 percent higher drive torque with the same safety margins required by classification societies and Schottel’s own internal standards.

For the same drive torque, it is possible to achieve significantly more streamlined underwater gearbox housings, thereby increasing the hydrodynamic propulsion efficiency.

In addition to the increased efficiency, customers also benefit from a high degree of reliability and minimized gearbox damage. The design engineers have designed the gearbox in such a way that the risk of flank fracture or scuffing is considerably reduced. This increases the service life and reliability and reduces servicing costs.

Schottel says that with the HTG it has revolutionized gearbox technology with a view to the special requirements of shipbuilding. State-of-the-art milling and calculation methods enable shapes that boost performance and increase reliability.
