MAY 8, 2014 — A longliner ordered by a fishing company based in the French overseas territory of Réunion in the Indian Ocean will be built to the same basic ST-155L design from Norway’s Skipsteknisk as that chosen by Seattle headquartered Blue North Fisheries for the longliner it has under contract at Anacortes, WA, shipbuilder Dakota Creek Industries.

The 59.45 m ST-155L ordered by French operator Cap Bourbon, the Réunion based affiliate of Boulogne headquartered Le  Garrec Group, will be built by shipbuilder Piriou’s Vietnam shipyard for delivery at the end of 2015.

Cap Bourbon went back to Piriou for the new ST-155L design vessel 12 years after taking delivery of the longliner Cap Horn I from the yard.

“This new vessel was designed from the experience acquired with Cap Horn I,” says Cap Bourbon’s General Manager, Jean Pierre Kinoo, “Several goals were stated: mainly to improve the security of the crew thanks to the use of a moon pool (for longline hauling), reduce the impact on the environment, improve energy efficiency with a diesel-electric propulsion system (with semi rapid motors) and with high output azimuth propellers. With our crews and Skipsteknisk we designed an innovative and economical vessel that guarantees maximal reliability and security in accordance with the image of this model and well-managed fishery.”

“Both the shipowner and the shipbuilder chose a Norwegian design to benefit from the experience of Norwegian shipowners regarding fishing, comfort, security and environmental protection,” said Piriou CEO, Pascal Piriou.

Designed to operate in the Indian Ocean, especially in the Kerguelen and Crozet areas, the
longliner features:

  • diesel electric propulsion is diesel-electric to provide flexible energy management, simplified maintenance and fuel economies;
  • two azimuthing propellers for better maneuverability;
  • A moonpool  system with central line hauling for crew security and better environmental protection.
