MES develops prototype 82,000 cu.m multigas carrier

OCTOBER 3, 2014 — Japan’s Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES) has developed a prototype 82,000 cu.m medium size multi gas carrier, able to carry LNG and shale gas derivatives such as ethane and ethylene gas (LEG).

MES says in the decade ahead LNG carriers will likely be large scale and medium scale vessels serving hub ports world wide. probably be classified into large scale LNGC and medium scale LNGC centering on the hub ports over the world.

Meanwhile, LEG carriers, which have usually been smaller, are expected to grow in size to have capacities comparable with medium scale LNG carriers.

Designated “neo82GC,” the new MES prototype ship has been developed in response to these trends and the growing trade scale of liquefied petroleum gases (LPG) such as propane and butane. It will be the first gas carrier to join the MES “neo” lineup of next generation eco-friendly ships.
