MAY 31, 2018 — Marine industry icon John (Jack) J. Gallagher, founder of Gallagher Marine Systems, has passed away.

“Jack lived an extraordinary life which included multiple careers but was always driven by his passion and devotion to the marine industry,” writes David C. Barry, President of Gallagher Marine Systems. “Jack’s careers included: time as a P&I correspondent/maritime attorney; inventor and patent holder of oil spill mitigation technology; pioneer in the field of oil spill contingency planning; educator and founding Director of the Center for Marine Environmental Protection & Safety at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

“Perhaps his greatest passion, the crowning achievement of his career, was his work as a Spill Manager/Qualified Individual, a role in which Jack had few peers. He was fiercely committed to doing everything morally possible to protect his clients in the time of peril, while at the same time doing everything possible to protect the environment.

“Jack attended and helped shape the outcome of more maritime casualties and oil spills than can be remembered.

“It is fitting that Jack passed away yesterday, May 28, 2018, on our U.S. Memorial Day holiday. Jack was justly proud of his service to his country, having served in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force. He was 89 years of age at his passing and fought valiantly until the end.

“I speak for all at Gallagher Marine Systems in saying how very proud we are to carry on Jack’s vision of service to the industry he so dearly loved”
