In the maritime industry, digital technology promises to create new value by collecting and utilizing data on ship operations and cargo movements, and sharing it among different players. At the same time, advances in digital technology are also introducing new means of ensuring safety, such as through data condition monitoring and evaluation, and advanced predictions through simulations.

In response to these trends, ClassNK has developed its “ClassNK Digital Grand Design 2030.”

It shows the future vision of the classification society for the digital society of 2030. With the grand design’s concept of “Creating innovation for a blue economy,” ClassNK has established the following three fundamental policies.

  • Further improve safety and efficiency by providing advanced and rational classification services through the development of new technical services based on data utilization such as survey systems in line with condition monitoring and evaluation technologies, and the creation of individual ship charts.
  • Diversify certification services and expand their scope. In particular, create new value in ocean-related businesses by providing support with new challenges involving ocean development and integrated onshore and offshore logistics services.
  • Support the realization of social innovation brought by digital technology and new challenges by establishing various rules and flexible environmental aspects.

“ClassNK aims to support the evolution of ocean-related business by meeting new needs from smarter logistics brought about by digital technology and data distribution, and by contributing to the further improvement of safety,” says Dr. Toshiro Arima, Corporate Officer and General Manager of ClassNK’s Digital Transformation Center. “To realize its digital grand design and smoothly incorporate new technologies, we will cultivate advanced human resources who have not only specialized knowledge, but also knowledge of digital technology, and develop our accumulated information and know-how.”

A business plan based on these policies is also being developed as a road map and will be announced at a later date.
