Canadian Coast Guard ship gets speeding ticket

SEPTEMBER 18, 2017 – Transport Canada hit the Canadian Coast Guard ship Sir William Alexander with a $6,000 penalty on September 15 for allegedly violating a speed restriction imposed on August 11 in the western Gulf of St. Lawrence, between the Quebec north shore and just north of Prince Edward Island, to help ensure navigational safety and to protect the marine environment, due to the increased presence of whales. It applies to vessels 20 m or more to a maximum of 10 knots.

The penalty imposed on the Coast Guard ship came the day after Transport Canada hit the Greek flagged 87,328 dwt bulker Petalon, operated by Goulandris Brothers with a $6,000 penalty for an alleged non-compliance with the temporary mandatory slow down.

Both the Coast Guard and Goulandris have 30 days to appeal the penalties.
