Braemar promotes NASSCO LNG containment system
Written by Nick BlenkeyOCTOBER 5, 2012 — Braemar Engineering (formerly Wavespec) is promising to unveil what it says is a “leap in technology” at next week’s Gastech 2012 event in London: the revolutionary new LNG containment system developed by General Dynamics NASSCO.
Braemar Engineering reported back in February that it was to market this technology (see earlier story).
Allowing tanks to be built in a matter of weeks, the new flat plate technology leads to potential cost savings of up to 30 percent compared with traditional alternatives.
Geoff Green, Managing Director of Braemar Engineering will be speaking at Gastech 2012, explaining how a patented universal support system has allowed the design and development of an innovative new system that has no filling restrictions and is not compromised by sloshing loads.
“This system will make a real difference”, explains Mr. Green. “It can be used in a wide range of applications: Floating Production and Storage (FPSO); Floating Storage Regasification Units (FSRU), LNG transport and LNG marine fuel tanks. It can even be used as offshore storage.
“The new system is also completely scalable,” he added. “It can be used in small scale LNG vessels all the way up to the largest LNG carriers currently in service.”
The new Type B containment system is designed to be constructed, outfitted, insulated and tested off hull and lifted complete into the vessel while the vessel is still in the construction dock. This leads to a significant reduction in vessel construction costs and at the same time the use of on shore construction facilities ensures the highest standards of quality care and repeatability.
The system comprises an aluminium LNG tank connected to the steel frame by patented universal supports which allow the aluminum tank to expand and contract while at the same time transmitting liquid and sloshing loads directly into the vessel’s structure.
Approval in principle has been obtained from both ABS and Lloyd’s Register
