The latest AWO Letter from the American Waterways Operator (AWO) says that the association is working on a letter to the Acting Assistant Secretary of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Secretary of Labor.

The letter urges OSHA to work with the Coast Guard and the Maritime Administration to ensure its emergency temporary standard that will require businesses with 100 or more employees to mandate COVID-19 vaccination or weekly testing for workers is practicable for the tugboat, towboat, and barge industry.

The letter raises concerns that members have communicated to AWO regarding the feasibility of weekly testing in the industry’s unique operational environment. AWO has also conveyed these issues to the Coast Guard and the Maritime Administration, which are working with OSHA on this matter through the federal interagency process.
