RTA’s Jose Ruiz to speak on New Orleans ferry operations at FERRIES 2020

Rounding out the lineup of expert speakers at Marine Log’s free virtual FERRIES 2020 conference on November 9-10 is Jose Ruiz, chief maritime officer for the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority (RTA). His topic: “Maintaining Mobility in the Midst of a Pandemic: A Look at New Orleans RTA Ferry Operations.”

As chief maritime officer, Ruiz, who joined the RTA this year, is responsible for the ferry system’s successful management within the framework ofcity, state, and federal ferry related legislation. He has more than 25 years of maritime industry, general law, and shoreside management experience. Prior to joining RTA served as executive director of the Puerto Rico Maritime Transport Authority, where he managed the day-to-day operations within the San Juan Harbor and Puerto Rico’s municipal islands of a ferry passenger and cargo transit service with an annual ridership of over 1.5 million riders.

Ruiz graduated from Texas A&M University at Galveston with a bachelor’s degree in marine transportation and holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of Puerto Rico Law School. He is a licensed U.S. Coast Guard Third Mate Unlimited Tonnage with Ballast Control Operator.
