LNG-fueled ferry on delivery voyage to Canada

APRIL 3, 2014 — Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri reports that the first LNG fueled ferry built in Italy, the F.-A.-Gauthier, departed its shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia, Naples, April 1, after successfully completing LNG sea trials.

The ship is now sailing to Matane, Quebec, Canada. Delivery by the shipbuilder to ferry operator Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ) will take place when the ship arrives in Canada.

The 133 m x 22 m F.-A.-Gauthier will be able to reach a maximum service speed of 20 knots and to carry 800 passengers and 180 vehicles.

The ship’s integrated diesel electric propulsion system has four Wärtsilä 12V34DF dual-fuel generating sets. that can run on either LNG or MDO Gas – LNG) or marine diesel oil (MDO). In addition to the four main power generating sets, Wärtsilä also supplied its LNGPac system. Designed and developed by Wärtsilä, the LNGPac comprises onboard LNG bunkering, storage tanks and handling equipment, as well as the related safety control and automation systems.

The two electric propulsion engines operate azimuthing thrusters, each equipped with two contra-rotating propellers, which together with bow thrusters, make the ferry exceptionally maneuverable. These characteristics, combined with a complex and extensive system of ramps and doors at both bow and stern, will allow the vessel to load and unload quickly.

The ferry’s hull is certified ice class 1A and the propulsion is certified class 1AS, allowing the vessel to operate non-stop in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, known for its adverse weather conditions. F.-A.-Gauthier is also able to break sea ice, thanks to its innovative bow and stern, designed and patented by Fincantieri.
