MAY 6, 2014 — Demonstrating that Chinese shipbuilders are now very much a force to be reckoned with in the market for large containerships, Singapore-listed Chinese shipbuilder Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has delivered Hanjin Jungil, the first 10,000 TEU box ship from its Xinfu yard.

Yangzijiang has orders for 21 containerships of this size for Seaspan Corporation. The first of these, Hanjin Buddha, was delivered from its New Yangzi yard.

With the delivery of the second vessel, the Xinfu yard is now fully operational and is targeted to deliver six more 10,000 TEU ships in 2014

“The 10,000 TEU containership is Yangzijiang’s flagship product. It embodies our break into the large containership market which was previously dominated by the Korean yards,” says Group Executive Chairman Mr. Ren Yuanlin. “The on-time delivery of the first two units of 10,000 TEU containerships proves our ability to execute the orders despite being new to this product category.”

Mr. Ren says that the Xinfu yard, which is currently managed by his son, Mr. Ren Letian, has given the group substantial added capacity that will initially will be utilized predominantly for the construction of the 10,000 TEU vessels.
