August 21, 2015—The Women’s International Shipping & Trading Association – UK (WISTA-UK), in conjunction with UKTI, will again be hosting a series of free events, seminars, and workshops during the first day of London International Shipping Week (LISW), September 7. LISW will run from September 7-11.  Topics will cover women in command, maritime incidents, and the River Thames.

“It is great to be working with such a well-established trading association that has been creating opportunities for women in the last 38 years,” says Parveen Thornhill, Regional Director for London, UKTI. “This day will create key networking opportunities for those in the shipping industry.”

WISTA is a major player in attracting women to the marine industry and in supporting women in management positions. Founded in 1974, WISTA-UK is the oldest of the WISTA National associations. The UK maintains a strong position in the shipping industry, with 1.5% of the world fleet’s capacity owned by UK-based companies and 3.2% managed by UK-based companies, making it a good location for networking opportunities.

“LISW is one of the most prestigious and eagerly anticipated shipping events in the maritime world and WISTA-UK is delighted to once again be a part of the celebration of UK shipping,” says Sue Terpilowski OBE, President, WISTA-UK. “London has always been one of the centers of the maritime world and the return of LISW will once again give us the opportunity to show not only how important women are in shipping, but also why the UK remains at the forefront of maritime technology.”

Appropriately, the first seminar will discuss the challenges women face in marine-based leadership positions. As only approximately 4% of seagoing staff is female, the primary focus will be how to recruit and retain seafarers to maintain qualified crews.

The second session, titled “The Perfect Dilemma – an Interactive Workshop,” will discuss the complexities of maritime casualties—specifically the risks and how to avoid them, how to react when incidents occur, and how to follow regulations. There will be an additional presentation on crisis media relations.

The third session will cover the role of the River Thames in shaping English history, the changing use of Thames-side facilities, and the current state of the River Thames.

WISTA-UK’s schedule of events will culminate in a final networking evening event with a silent auction for WISTA-UK charities Seavision and OSCAR.
