Transport Canada is to investigate an accident in which two vessels collided while transiting Canada’s Welland Canal, in opposite directions, this past Saturday.

YouTube video caught the incident in which the Florence Spirit, an 8,935 dwt, McKeil Marine operated, Canadian-flag, general cargo ship collided with the 12,744 dwt general cargo ship Alanis, operated by German based Rambow Reederei and flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda.

Florence Spirit was heading down the canal, the MV Alanis was heading up.

The Welland Tribune quotes Jean Aubry-Morin, vice president of external relations at the Seaway Management Corp, as saying that the collision took place at 3:55 p.m. south of Port Robinson and that the two collided starboard side to starboard side.

“Normally, they would be passing port side to port side,” the newspaper quotes him as saying.
