U.K ship repairer SMS Southampton, part of the SMS Group, has completed a significant dredge refit for Tarmac Marine.

The refit involved the 72 meter, 1997-built aggregate dredge City of Chichester and was completed alongside at a dedicated, controlled berth in Southampton’s Western Docks.

The work undertaken included refurbishment of the dredge’s feeder hopper (completed in SMS’s nearby workshops), replacement of its discharge grab plus a routine number of general repairs to the dredge and discharge equipment and a significant pipework repairs, renewals and fabrication/manufacturing.

SMS also completed a number of packages of electrical inspection and systems testing.

“The package of works was extensive with some significant emerging challenges; that said the team at Tarmac, both on and off the ship, supported the refit tremendously,” said Dave Chaffers, General Manager of SMS in Southampton,

“Working with Dave and the SMS team in Southampton has been a real pleasure,” said Duncan Payne, Ship Manager, Tarmac Marine Ltd. “Given the challenges of the project we’re very pleased with the outcome and look forward to future works with The SMS Group.”
