Star Cruises cuts first steel for Genting World

FEBRUARY 11, 2015 — Star Cruises officially launched the start of construction of Genting World, the first of two next generation cruise ships, in a steel cutting ceremony that saw Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, Chairman and CEO of parent Genting Hong Kong, push the button of a plasma torch in the state of the art laser center at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

“It is a proud moment for all of us at Genting Hong Kong, especially for me, as today’s steel cutting ceremony marks a new chapter for Genting Hong Kong, reaffirming our Star Cruises brand as the leader in Asian cruise travel,” he said. “The delivery of these two newly commissioned mega cruise ships will enable us to continue to strengthen and further enhance our competitiveness across our key source markets.”

“We are glad to continue the long lasting relationship, which starts 20 years ago with building of SuperStar Leo and now we build these new ships for Star Cruises,” said the shipbuilder’s managing partner, Bernard Meyer.

The 151,000 gt, 21-deck ships will each have a capacity of about 4.500 passengers and 2,000 crew. They will be 324 m in length and 39.7 m in breadth and will reach a trial speed of about 23 knots.

They are set for deliveries in 2016 and 2017 and will offer a wide array of itineraries, leisure and entertainment options.
