SHI holds naming ceremony for world’s largest containership

MARCH 16, 2017 — There’s a new holder of the title “world’s biggest containership. Shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries, Ltd. yesterday held a naming ceremony at its Geoje, South Korea, shipyard for the first box ship to break the 20,000 TEU barrier, the 20,150 TEU MOL Triumph.

The ship is the first the first of six 20,150 TEU containerships ordered by Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. in February 2015. Four of the ships are being built by SHI and two by Japan’s Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.

The ships measure 400 mlong with a breadth of 58.8 m and draft of 32.8 m.

Main propulsion is by a MAN B&W G95ME engine,

MOL Triumph is scheduled for delivery to MOL later this month.
