Samsung order follows five ship order placed with DSME

SEPTEMBER 26, 2017 — In a regulatory filing today, South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries Co, said it had won a 1.1 billion-won (US$968 million) deal to build six containerships for delivery by the end of 2019.

The announcement came as no great surprise.

The shipyard did not reveal the name of the buyer, but it is Geneva headquartered Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), the world’s second largest container shipping company and the ships are reportedly 22,000 TEU mega ships.

Last week, Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co.reported that had booked 927 billion won (US$818 million) deal to build five container vessels for delivery by March 15, 2020. Again the buyer was reportedly MSC, with some reports at the time citing the shipowner as saying it was ordering eleven 22,000 TEU vessels. As we reported then, the additional six ships were widely expected to be built at Samsung.
