
Nuclear icebreaker will have Fluidmecanica winch

SEPTEMBER 22, 2014 — Fluidmecanica, Vigo, Spain, is to supply the main towing winch for a nuclear-powered icebreaker (Project 22220 LC-60YA) to be built at the Baltiysky Zavod shipyard in St. Petersburg, Russia.
The 173 m ship is planned to be completed by 2017.
It will be powered by two “RITM-200” pressurized water reactors that will generate 175MWe, giving the ship the power needed to break ice up to 3 m thick.
To be named the Arctic, the icebreaker will be granted the highest ice class – 9, meaning that it will be able to break ice in the Arctic area all year round.
