Knud E. Hansen designs RO/RO reefer

Written by Nick Blenkey

ReeferRO ROOCTOBER 3, 2013 — Danish naval architecture firm Knud E. Hansen A/S has developed a RO/RO reefer vessel, in close cooperation with Reefer Intel and Stena RO/RO.
Reefer Intel is owned by Mr. Birger Lindberg Skov, former President of Lauritzen Reefers A/S.

Unveiled at the recent Cool Logistics conference in Rotterdam, the vessel is designed for the banana trades from South and Central America into Europe.  With dimensions of 199 m long x 29 m breadth, a draught of 8.6 m and a deck height of 3.3 m, the vessel can load a total of 11,500 high cube pallets – 7,400 pallets on four reefer decks in the hold with the balance in the 206 containers on deck. This is a 45% increase on the capacity of traditional reefers.

The key to the design is how the cargo holds are loaded. Four internal RO/RO decks are accessed via a stern quarter ramp from the quayside. The four internal\decks are divided into a total of 10 individual compartments each with their own cooling and controlled atmosphere systems. Between the internal decks, fixed ramps are installed enabling a swift and efficient onboard RO/RO operation.

According to Knud E. Hansen, the ship can load and discharge in only 12 hours, compared to the average 36-48 hours of a traditional reefer. This not only gives a savings in port costs, but means that she ship can maintain its sailing schedule at a lower speed, resulting in significant fuel and emissions savings.
