Judge stays Alumni Association eviction from Kings Point

MAY 2, 2013 —The dispute between the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Association & Foundation and the present Academy superintendent, James Helis, drags on. As we reported earlier, Superintendent Helis has been trying to take the extraordinary step of booting the Association off the Kings Point campus (see earlier story).

Since then, the Alumni Association has taken the matter to court. It filed suit seeking relief on April 29 in New York Eastern District Federal Court against Superintendent Helis, U.S. Maritime Administrator David T. Matsuda, the United States Department of Transportation, the United States Maritime Administration and the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

Next day, the Association reported on its website: “The AAF has been granted a temporary stay of eviction and will not be leaving the campus today. The stay was granted by a federal judge and a ruling will be made next Monday, May 6th. Additional updates will be provided.”
