HHI adds mega floating crane

FEBRUARY 27, 2015 — Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd.(HII) reports that its Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries shipbuilding affiliate has completed a 10,000 ton heavy lift vessel (HVL), the Hyundai-10000, at its shipyard in Yeongam, South Korea. As well as being the world’s biggest shipbuilder, HHI is a leading offshore facilities contractor and after a series of final tests, the huge floating crane will be added to HHI’s offshore facility building infrastructure in Ulsan in March and begin operation from April this year.

The vessel is equipped with eight double truss jib cranes and measures 182 m in length, 70 m in width and 11 m in depth.

The addition of the Hyundai-10000 will see HHI’s maximum lifting capacity per module increase from 1,200 tons to 8,000 tons.

With the new HLV, HHI can install bigger modularized blocks that have been built on shore onto offshore facilities, minimizing the potential risks of working at height.

HHI says the addition of the mega-sized floating crane can help reduce construction time on a variety of offshore structures that it builds, achieving 24 billion Korean won ($21.9 million) in cost reduction annually. Upon delivery, the heavy lift vessel will be used to build 19 offshore projects, including the Q204 FPSO for BP, at HHI’s Ulsan facility.
